Surviving Life as a Woman of the Medieval Crusades...
Going on a Medieval Crusade was a male mission, a military enterprise in which only men could fight. Obviously, the women stayed home and did womanly things while their dashing, knightly husbands rode off and defended the Holy Land. Right? Wrong. Actually, many women also took up the cross and went off on Crusade, and they weren’t just the important warrior noble women, like Queen Eleanor of Aquitaine. Described as being “essential yet despised”, there were also the servants who looked after the animals and accompanied the army, the washerwomen, the camp-following prostitutes, and not forgetting the lice-pickers as well. Welcome to Medieval Madness.

At the empire’s height...

It was a spectacular win for Robert the Bruce, King of the Scots, over the two days of the 23rd and 24th of June 1314. Just like the triumph of Agincourt, which was to follow 100 years later, the Battle of Bannockburn was a win for the underdog, when a formidable army lost to one of significantly fewer numbers. A pivotal battle that would change the course of the First Scottish War of Independe...
Surviving Life as a Medieval Princess...

We often think of Medieval princesses in terms of fairy tales - as beautiful young ladies waiting around, in their tall pointy hats, for some knight to come along and rescue them from a tower. Let’s travel back in time now to the Middle Ages and meet some of these noble ladies and take a little look at how they navigated such an overwhelmingly male world. ...

The true misunderstanding of the middle ages or "dark ages" is not what is represented here, but rather the fact that history shifts it's focus from the developed Mediterranean to the northern areas which were arising out of tribal cultures. No one even bothers to make note of this shift of focus, which is at the crux of it all. Basically, yes there was a splitting up of the Roman Empire at it's core in the area we now refer to as Italy. However, the city states that evolved in this area upon the breaking up of the empire did not dissolve into ignorance as people seem to think. They in fact continued to evolve as separate city state institutions that pushed forward civilization. However, few people bother to look at those city states in much detail when talking about the middle ages re: falling into some "dark age." They instead look at the regressed state in the extended area of the empire which were never as evolved except for outposts. These areas were for the most part still rooted to a large part in the tribal culture they originated from, just moving into early kingdoms. They were always behind culturally and that is the context upon which people are comparing to ancient Rome. There is no comparison and to do so is ignorant or stupid. The whole concept of "dark ages" is rooted in this very ignorance and/or stupidity. There is an added area of misunderstanding here. In a sense, while the eastern Roman Empire did fall, it is the west that truly succeed in a way as it's lineage still exists to this day. Where the eastern Roman Empire was taken over and displaced, in the west it was fractured but the city states were a direct link to the original empire, the people and culture were the same, just fractured. So, in essence, the "empire" in the west was no longer an empire, but the people and culture continued. Yes, the culture did change due to this fracturing, including the rise of the church as the dominant unifying force in the area, but the people themselves were a continuation of those who lived there. Not only that, but this continued as the area reconnected into the state of Italy from the city states that remained, so this thread was never truly broken. In this way, the people of Italy truly are the descendants of the Roman Empire and in that way, it never really disappeared so much as lost it's empire status and changed over time. Another misunderstanding this presentation mentions is that the western empire collapsed "never to get back up." What in fact happened is that many of the scholars concentrated in the eastern Roman Empire after the west fractured, but when the crusades finally displaced them from the Eastern Roman Empire, where did they go? To the west of course, especially Florence. It was this flood of scholars from the collapse of the Eastern Roman Empire to the west and to Florence which was the imputes for the Renaissance, so one could hardly say "never to get back up" when in fact not only did it get back up but was the spark of innovation for the western world. in fact, it took another 100 years for the Renaissance to take hold in the north, an extreme amount of time really, which shows how fertile the remnants of the Roman Empire really still were in the area that was the heart of the empire. Besides the arts, so many other foundations of modern civilization came from the area at this time, like all of modern banking and finance, re: the Medici family, much of the basis of modern political thought, re: Machiavelli, most of the advanced philosophical thought was from ecclesiastical sources, re: people we now refer to as saints in the Catholic Church who were for the most part from this area, etc, etc... In essence, while the north was evolving from early kingdoms into feudal states and eventually the monarchies and empires they became, the remnants of the Roman Empire in the area south of the Dolomites, or Alps... they continued to evolve intellectually and socially while maintaining their size for the most part, not growing like the north and thus falling under the radar of many historians.

I was really glad to hear that cats were valued during the Middle Ages. However, I had heard that cats were also associated with witches. In fact, although cats were regarded this way in many Christian homes, Jews kept cats and kept themselves clean (baths were also shunned in many Christian homes) and were thus able to avoid the Plague, which was carried by fleas on rats. Jews were thereby ignorantly blamed for being "in league with the devil." I hope this stupidity was not as widespread as I'd heard.
